The Roll Record and the journal as they are today, drawn by the product's own components over invented trades (as of 09-30-2026). Original cost not recovered by credits on this chain. Cash back from credit rolls: $0, the sum of the credits taken on this chain's rolls. Net cash invested is cost + debits − credits; an open option can still lose its remaining value even after its original cost has been recovered.

Time runs left to right. The top panel is each leg’s strike over time, with the rolls between them; each rail is a contract held at its strike, dashed out to its expiration. Rolling and close-at-R1 are your fills, so both spreads you paid are inside them; commissions and regulatory fees are not in the broker feed and are not deducted. Rolling is drawn as realized P/L, stepping at each closing fill: nothing between fills is marked. Hold original could not be valued for this chain: no underlying close on file at entry.

How these figures are counted

From these fictional fills: 8 chains with a roll: 6 closed, 2 still open. Every closed chain counts, losses included: 3 did worse than walking away. Walking away means closing the first contract at the first roll, at the price that roll actually filled. 2 still open: listed, not scored.

The graded sheets below count the 7 with two or more closed legs: 6 closed (the same 6 scored here), 1 still open. The other 1 rolled straight into a leg that is still open, so it has one closed leg and is not graded.

Both sides are fills, so both net the spreads you paid; neither nets commissions or fees. One trader’s chains describe that trader, not an edge.

What rolling does, and what this page records
  1. Keep a good idea aliveStill bullish on the name, but the entry came early? A roll closes the contract and opens another, often further out, so the position stays on instead of being closed at a loss. Each roll above shows what it cost or paid.
  2. Pull your cost back outA roll that pays a credit hands cash back while the position stays on. The strip shows net cash invested: the first contract’s cost, plus debits, minus credits. At zero the original cost is back out; below zero it is a net credit. The open option can still lose its remaining value.
  3. Every roll journaled from your fillsFor members, each roll is recorded automatically from your broker fills; there is nothing to type. The scoreboard is the review: every chain, including the ones where rolling did worse than walking away.

A record of your own rolls, not advice, and not evidence that rolling works better than closing. Credits lower your net cash invested, and they also lower what stays in the trade if the stock keeps moving your way. Recovering the original cost does not protect the open option: it can still lose its remaining value.

6 closed graded chains; 1 still open, listed and kept out of these totals. Rolling beat walking away in 3 of 6 closed. 1 more chain rolled straight into a leg still open and is not graded.Measured from these fictional fills, before commissions and fees

  • Before commissions and fees, across the 6 closed chains, the legs after the first added money in 3 of 6, cost money in 3, and were flat in 0.
  • The final leg was the chain's cumulative high point in 2 of 6 chains; that high point is chosen after the fact, so it was not a decision available at the time.
  • 3 of your 10 rolls were made with under 21 days left on the contract rolled out of (in 3 of 8 chains); 4 paid a net debit and 6 took a net credit, from fills. Counted across all 8 chains with a roll, open ones included; how you rolled, not how it turned out.

A description of your own chains, not advice and not evidence that any way of rolling works better. With this few chains, one trade can change any of these counts.

Reading the Roll Record

Illustrative · fictional data · not a recommendation

Every rolled chain from the fills, closed ones scored against walking away at the first roll, open ones listed and not scored, the modeled hold-original kept apart. One invented trader’s chains describe that trader, not an edge. Pick any chain in the list above to draw it; the chart replays the chain roll by roll, and the ledger under it lists every fill.

Walking away
Closing the first contract at the first roll, at the price that roll actually filled. Each closed chain is scored rolling minus walking away, from fills, before commissions and fees.
Net cash invested
The first contract’s cost, plus debits, minus credits. Below zero it is a net credit. An open option can still lose its remaining value even after its original cost has been recovered.
Hold original (marked)
What the untouched first contract was worth: intrinsic once it expired; before that, its own last trade, or a model calibrated against real trades where it did not trade. Dates it cannot value are left blank. No spread or fees on that side; not a fill, and never added to the measured figures.
Open roll chains
Listed, never scored, until the last leg closes; the open leg is not marked to market.

What these numbers mean

Return on premium is the headline: every dollar you got back, divided by every dollar of premium you paid. It is size-weighted, so a big position counts for what it actually cost you. Compare it to anything — an index, a savings account, last quarter.

Avg return per leg , on the History tab, is the plain average instead — each leg counting once regardless of size. When it disagrees with the headline, the gap tells you something: a better average than headline means your big positions are dragging; the reverse means your size is going where it should. It sits over there rather than here because that is where its confidence interval is, and an average this small a sample without one invites more confidence than it has earned.

Per-trade results are the same idea one trade at a time — your result as a percent of the premium you put at risk, so a trade that paid $250 and made $500 is +200% on premium. For a long option that premium is the whole planned risk, which is why the per-trade figure and the headline share a unit. Verify freezes the denominator the moment you log the trade, so the score is against the plan you actually had.

What is deliberately NOT shown is a sum of those per-trade percentages. Adding them across trades counts a total loss on a $500 position exactly as heavily as one on a $65,000 position, which hides real money. This dashboard once summed them to a loss of nine and a half premiums while carrying $394,310 of losses that never happened; return on premium would have shown roughly -12% instead of -3%.

Broker sync

Connected

Last sync: 09-30-2026, 1:00 PM CTAge: 2 hours oldProvider delay: broker data can lag at SnapTrade, up to a day for Robinhood

Import history

Sync pulls the last two weeks of fills, closes open journal trades from them and links same-day rolls into chains; the full history reloads nightly. Plans are still yours to author at entry. Read-only: Verify cannot place orders.

Why some fills are skipped

A buy your broker does not label as opening or closing is skipped, never used to verify a plan - closing a short position looks identical to opening a long one in that feed. Sync reports no count for these. Import history reads the same records but counts them by contract rather than by fill, so its number will not match what this sync passed over.

Locked plans awaiting a fill (1)

entry on record before the order

A locked plan is your entry on record before the order exists. When your broker shows the opening fill, it verifies — or it stands in your history as a plan you didn't take.
